The Pastor's Pen

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.  (Romans 1:16)

Bobby Richardson, the star second baseman of the New York Yankees, tells how Christianity first meant something to him when he broke into baseball in 1952.  During his spring training in Virginia, the word came that a talented player from another club was going to join them.  For some reason this news stimulated much talk among the players, but he didn’t know why.  As Bobby came to know him, however, he discovered the reason.  The new man was a dedicated Christian, and many of the players resented the things he stood for.  Outwardly they scorned him, but inwardly they were inspired by his example, and they respected him.

One man’s influence can be a great blessing.  It can be the thing that actually shapes another man’s life, as it did for Bobby Richardson.

On one occasion he stated that the pro’s life is tough because it is hard to take a stand.  This may be particularly true for the Class of 2009 as they leave their High School experience and 18 years of home life to move on to college or career.  It’s a challenge to stand and serve God, but when you take your stand you will receive the respect and admiration of those around you.  To strengthen your Christian witness, you may find it helpful to remember the verse that was a favorite for Bobby Richardson:  I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.

May God bless the Graduating Class of 2009!  Our prayer is that wherever you go and in everything you do that you will be a continual witness for the Lord Jesus Christ!

We’re Proud Of You!
